In the old days, leaving LA to go anywhere meant getting up at 4 AM with the hopes of being on the road by 4:30. Since retirement, I’ve found going north is easier to do after the rush hour, not before. Morro Bay is a scant 4 hour trip up the coast and, being a state campground, one can’t usually check in early. So, we headed out around 9:30 with the idea of being there some time around 2.

Anyone who knows me, knows I like long days in the saddle. I’ve done more thousand mile days than I can count but I have never done one for the record. We made a leisurely trip to Morro Bay and pulled into Morro Bay State Park Campground about three in the afternoon. I had not bothered to make a reservation knowing there would be midweek spots available.
